Harold Godwinson was the Earl of Wessex when Edward the Confessor died. The witan supported his claim to the throne and proclaimed him King of England. This coronation was the spark that put fire to England, thriggering two invasions, one from the North by the Norwegians and one from the South by the Normans. After defeating the Vikings and Stamford Bridge, Harold moved south and faced William the Bastard at Hastings, where he was killed, by an arrow in the eye according to the legend and Norman propaganda.
